Oval Fencing Change to Allow Additional Pedestrian Access

Ohio State Energy Partners (OSEP), ENGIE Services and The Ohio State University began work in April to repair or replace 3,000 feet of aging utilities underneath The Oval. Multiple phases of fencing are required on The Oval to support safety. In anticipation of autumn semester, additional pedestrian access was opened on Friday, August 10. A portion of fencing was removed to allow pedestrians to utilize the long walk to travel east and west through the center of The Oval. The project is expected to continue into November. Once complete, reduced fencing will be required to support landscape restoration.

In addition, separate construction at nearby Jennings Hall has shifted pedestrian traffic to the east side of Neil Avenue between John Herrick Drive and 11th Avenue, as the west side will be closed.

Please exercise caution when traveling near construction zones and follow the instructions of traffic and safety officers.

Plan Ahead with Pedestrian Safety Maps

The university continues to grow with important construction projects taking place in the core of campus that align with the university’s framework plan. Areas around Neil Avenue, Herrick Drive and High Street are currently impacted. Please plan ahead and allow extra time while walking, biking or driving to class or work. The safety of students, faculty and staff is our top priority so please take a moment to view pedestrian maps and CABS routes to help navigate campus this fall.

You’re going places. Get there safely.

Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists all share the responsibility when traveling on and around campus. By law, bicycles are vehicles and may use the full lane when traveling. Motorists are required to give bicyclists three feet or more when passing. Pedestrians should use marked crosswalks and sidewalks. Whether walking, biking or driving, we all share the road and the responsibility in assuring it’s done safely.
